The monograph Challenges of the Middle Bronze Age: the Vatin Culture and Balkan Neighbours by Mariјa Ljuština was created four decades after the contributionс by M. Garašanin in Volume IV of Prehistory of Yugoslav Lands (1983), as an overview of conditions in the Middle Bronze Age of Southeast Europe in the light of the results of recent research. The most extensive chapter in the monograph is dedicated to the Vatin culture. It presents the history of research into this cultural phenomenon, analyses of ceramic material, regional groups, settlement sites and funerary practices. Special attention is paid to the consolidation of the chronological position of the Vatin culture on the basis of all currently available data. The following chapters are dedicated to the Balkan neighbours in interaction with the bearers of the Vatin culture: On the Morava transversal. The Vatin culture and group Bubanj-Hum IV-Ljuljaci, Western Serbia in focus: the Vatin culture in the western parts of Serbia through the prism of traditional settings and facts in the XXI century and The Vatin culture and neighbours in north-eastern Serbia.
